But that theory ignores the fact that in the ST universe matter and energy are different states of the same thing and machines can convert between them. If you pull an ice cube trays out of the freezer, let it melt, then refreeze it, did the ice lose it's soul?

It seems pretty clear that *identity* is preserved (and they treat is as very morally dangerous when transporters create clones like Thomas Riker), and it also seems like they don't really believe in the "soul" per se.

In the absence of a soul, "make a perfect copy and technically restrict clones" should be ok. But if you believe in a soul it gets pretty dicey! On the other hand, the notion of the soul has changed a lot with tech. Photos and surgery were sometimes shunned as soul destroying.
