        I’ve always read it and used it as tongue-in-check. Is that wrong?

        A lot of times it seems like it's legitimately asking to not be replied to, and I see that nobody actually does reply. "{{controversial opinion I'm sure I'm right about but don't want to defend}} don't @ me"

        Also, often, <opinion for which folks get harassed a lot>, "don't at me". I see a lot of women doing this for this reason. It's often stuff that they're tired of defending because the folks who @ them don't do basic research

        If you’re looking for the “original” meaning, it’s when one says something controversial, yet wants to pre-emptively stymie any counterpoints because one’s opininion is closely held, and cannot be changed.

        Like many have mentioned, it quickly turned into a narcissist’s dream; the perfect way to use reverse psychology for attention, while simultaneously eking out every last drop of drama.

        Automatic last word. Because all of Twitter holds this ritual practice sacred... "Oh damn, they invoked 'dont @ me'. Guess we can't say anything!"

        Well, you see, back when Twitter was still new, you used to use the "@" symbol to reply to someone instead of Twitter just doing it for you automatically. Also, likes, retweets and replies were all different things. 🙃

        Passive aggressiveness at its finest. Very similar to "I'm not a racist, but {{racist comment}}" or the "I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but {{hurtful comment.}}
