I'm well aware of that. More effort on those advancements was deprioritized in favor of turning Servo into an AR vehicle.

I'm curious why you think Servo is such an important investment compared to say Gecko which is Mozilla's only viable implementation of the web. You seem bothered at Servo's deprioritization, and not at all concerned about the state of Gecko which is chronically underfunded, IMO.

I am concerned about Gecko underfunding. What would you estimate the total budget of Gecko engineering (the old "Platform" team) to be?

I'm more bothered by Servo being shifted from researching platform advancements to a speculative moonshot so soon after getting a payoff from earlier platform advancements. I don't think Servo needs drastically more Mozilla-funded resources.

What is it that you want Servo to be?

What it has been: a pipeline for risky web platform experiments that can make their web back into Gecko to make Gecko better. I don't particularly see any reason why good Gecko engineers couldn't take some time away from the grind to prototype ideas.

If you want a way to keep great platform developers, giving them a chance to step away from the grind periodically to try out ideas they already have in a more prototype-friendly environment couldn't hurt.

We agree. We've periodically had "R&D" that worked much like that, where core product engineers went off to try something revolutionary. On the app side you can see it with things like project Tofino. Before R&D we had "Labs" and before that, people just made time with no org.

And of all of those things, Research and Servo have been the closest to consistently feeding new tech to Platform. I don't think Mozilla (or Gecko) is helped by moving back towards a Labs or "make time" model. Servo's success (as you described) means more like that, plz.

I hear ya. What more do you want from Servo in the near term? It gave us an entirely new styling and rendering engine as well as a new memory safe language. Seems like we got a couple more years at least to integrate all of that into products and see it pay off.

@pcwalton's Pathfinder seems promising, but more generally, the work towards web-compat completion is what made WebRender and Stylo close enough to consider integrating. Keeping projects warm and resourced is cheaper than rebooting them later.

I heard (from the horse's mouth) that the entire Servo team has been "acquired" by Mixed Reality. Reams and reams of Internets back and forth make it clear that this is actually what happened and not a miscommunication of some kind. https://blog.servo.org/2018/03/09/servo-and-mixed-reality/ …

"if we can make it work for VR, it'll be great for desktop web" has a kernel of truth, but was mostly a messaging dodge. Servo is deprioritizing finishing web compat in favor of MR.

I'm just one person, but the way I see Servo is as R&D for things that might make it into Gecko, delivered to users in a Firefox browser. That work continues. What may not continue is turning Servo from an R&D engine into a commercially viable full web platform implementation.

The sudden shift in prioritization from web compat to VR projects described in the post (https://blog.servo.org/2018/03/09/servo-and-mixed-reality/ …) belies that. "Just not a full fledged product" is the party line, not a reflection of the the technical and organizational decisions that were made by leadership.

And I point you again at https://github.com/servo/webrender/issues/2506 … the horse's mouth as it were. "we're still planning to continue to both have the Mozilla Servo staff work on Webrender and Pathfinder and the Firefox team investigate its use inside of that product."

But the ongoing work to reach full production quality is happening within the FF team, while Servo folks press on to things like Pathfinder. Webcompat work on parallel layout is ongoing and is needed for MR. just talked with @ManishEarth about that this week.
