$500MM for Mozilla is, from my perspective, in the same league as a company making tens of billions with a much more diverse portfolio. $500MM is a ton of money, not "scrappy" in any sense.

"Troll the Titans" is a ridiculous slogan for a company with $500MM a year in annual revenue.

It's also definitely enough. There is no question.

Why do you think it is that there are only 4 companies, three of which are the biggest software companies in the world, with the budgets to build and advance an implementation of the Web platform?

I don't think it's because it costs half a billion dollars a year to implement the web. Half a billion dollars is a lot of money. There's a lot of space between "it's cheap" and "you need half a billion dollars"

If not the cost then what? (How much do you think it would cost to do a full implementation of the Web platform without forking one of the existing implementations?)

I don't understand the forking restriction. Webkit was a fork of Konquerer, Blink was a fork of Webkit. UC was a fork of Webkit. It's just not a requirement to not fork. The requirement is maintaining competitive value after you fork, which is tricky and not cheap.

Just trying to make the point that even the near trillion dollar corporations haven't built an engine from scratch (except Microsoft.) It's not cheap and it's getting more expensive all the time as the web platform expands dramatically pretty much every year.

Even MS didn't start from scratch. First Spyglass to IE and the IE to Edge. Very large component rewrites on the way of course.

Nobody starts from scratch, including Google and Apple, which makes starting from scratch a bad heuristic to use.

At least one of you suggested investing in Servo instead of (I don't know what instead of) which is a start from scratch as much as Gecko was. Sure it's borrowing SpiderMonkey and a bit more. So did Gecko (and still does.) It takes years to turn a "new" engine into web compat.
