This is more or less the definition of the slippery slope fallacy. You don't need an absolutist objection to regulation to draw reasonable lines around regulation, and in fact it makes your job harder, because in practice the absolutist lines are crossed all the time.
The principle of "no regulation at all" isn't politically defensible in practice, so all the public sees is an absolutist position with no teeth.
