American Muslims broadly believe that American law is the law of the land, as do American Jews and American Christians. Freedom of religion means that American Muslims can practice according to their religious law (Sharia) just as Jews follow ours (Halakha).

Claims that American Muslims don't believe in American law or can't be Americans and Muslims at the same time have exactly the same structure as anti-Semitic beliefs and are wrong (morally and empirically).

No one in this thread put forward the argument that American Muslims don't believe in American law or can't be Americans. So why bring it up?

Because it's a belief highly correlated with the idea that "Muslims" writ large are so extreme that the handful of Muslims who aren't should be labeled moderate. If you believe that the vast majority of American Muslims are extremists, how could you not come to that conclusion?

I've never said that and I don't believe that the vast majority of American Muslims are extremists.

Then don't you think using the term "moderate muslim" is too broad and extrapolating too much from specific regional differences?

No, relatively speaking, the number of Muslims in US and Europe is not that significant in comparison with the population of Muslims in Middle East, North Africa and South-East Asia.

With over a billion people, we're not even talking about a consistent definition of "Sharia law" and are including Muslim countries. Bottom line: just because of lot of people in X demographic are extremist doesn't mean "Moderate X" makes sense.
