Remember how I was ranting the other day about how way more devs use Windows than you think? Turns out to be true.pic.twitter.com/PoeJdU0VSd

Of course it’s true. Who didn’t believe you? Windows still dominates the world. Especially in the enterprise. Don’t let the microcosm known as Silicon Valley fool you. 😉

The conversation was about how difficult it is for Windows users (like myself) to follow tutorials and contribute to projects. It's time for that to change.

Unfortunately, it's also hard for project maintainers to make tools work on Windows. We've had a rough time keeping the Firebase CLI Windows-compat but we do our best. Windows command prompt is *awful*

I think it's a vicious cycle. People don't care to make things work (or find it too hard), so the abstractions people use don't handle Windows well, so people find it hard ... rinse, repeat.

Agree, but setting aside community support command prompt is still objectively terrible compared to a posix shell.

Having used both Windows and OSX, I wouldn't say I find Powershell "objectively terrible", and if you just want a POSIX-style shell (rather than real compat), git-bash, etc. would work.

Setting up a windows dev environment is a pain. Mac: plug it in, turn it on, have PHP, Python, Apache already installed. :D

I do this: 1. set up chocolatey 2. choco install cmder 3. choco install yarn 4. choco install git 5. rustup install (should be on chocolatey!) 6. choco install visualstudiocode 7. choco install ruby 8. choco install ruby2.devkit more or less done. Seems ok.

FWIW do you like WSL? It takes less steps for me to get my previous Mac/Unix like env just given WSLs capabilities.

It works until it doesn't work. But it always fails eventually. I'm looking forward to that not being true.

I dumped my Windows for MacOS as Windows 8 was tragic. Getting tooling to work was a complete nightmare, Node, NPM, Gulp, Grunt. Got a MacBook and everything just worked

Windows 8 was a total disaster. hidpi support was terrible, dev tooling was in its infancy (node barely worked). Things are better now!https://twitter.com/wycats/status/974037289453039616 …

Macs are more restricted but they just work. I’ve had my MacBook 3 years. Battery still around 7-8 hours. Did the first Norton scan on it the other day, not one malware, virus found ..not even a cookie. Having to reboot your windows machine and manually editing env vars is a joke

I think everything up to Windows 7 was great. Win7 was probably the best OS, but they lost the plot with 8 and after

Going by stackoverflow survey, 80% of developers are web developers. So it seems to me that the results in there may be quite skewed. So unless you claim that 80% of world Devs are web Devs, then it's just not true.

Umm, very difficult question and my answer would probably be skewed by my experience. I don't think we have a decent way of knowing, as the platform choice usually is constrained by the tech being developed/used.

I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that many developers use Windows.
