Windows is all too often an afterthought in the open source world, but an enormous number of people in the world use it primarily or even exclusively. I’ve found simply announcing I *care* about the Windows experience brings grateful devs out of the woodwork.

Sorry I had to teach while this conversation went on, great points throughout the thread. This point is what I am most interested in, because this describes my students perfectly. We need something like https://github.com/webcompat/web-bugs … but for platform-assumption bugs in open source env

i think not supporting everyone is a sign of an immature product & dev (team); literally takes no more effort, less if you abstract it away
-
i don't think a list of "bad things" is going to move the yardstick, it's more reasonable to open PRs with fixes in docs... would be better
-
if i could write an app to do it for me without concern of getting banned from github, cause ... bots... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
however i can say with confidence that if you do it properly you break down adoption walls much quicker, because "it just works"

Imagine seeing a rant that says that someone is frustrated that you exist and wish you didn't exist at all ("they should just buy a mac!"). The whole situation is toxic to the great majority of computer users getting into programming.

For me, the worst is when people smirk and go "here Yehuda goes again with his Windows rant". I bring it up over and over because open source is failing something like 90% of the world's computer users through basic neglect. And we're proud of it!

i end up supporting those devs in my day job as they try to run my work and sometimes deal with edge cases, or their own mistakes…
-
everyone’s playing ‘catch up’ on the knowledge because we’re too lazy to write good docs imo
-
The path thing is not about docs, sadly. People are proud to give you the "dirty little secret" that you don't really need to care about path.join(). Which is wrong, but good luck convincing people of that. "\\?\ -- are you kidding me? Windows is bad and you should feel bad"
