It seems like the reason #SmooshGate blew up is that someone proposed "smoosh", nobody immediately shut it down, and it turned into a proxy fight over people's pre-existing feelings about the abstract question of "how much breakage is acceptable", right?

Which was smart and a good policy. But it was by no means the overarching feeling of the period, especially when jQuery still had very real competition around its inception; competition that didn't follow a similar policy. I'm very glad jQuery "won" though!
