Turning "we try hard not to break sites if we can avoid it" into a morally suspect position strikes me as overheated rhetoric. The details matter. smoosh() is a stupid name, but changing contains() to includes() was a reasonable thing to do to avoid breaking sites.

If TC39 can only handle web dev input when it's not there or when it agrees with it, then there's no point to open source the discussion. I understand we can't design by committee on JS but there has to be at least some form of accountability and democracy in the process.
-
Lots of web devs are on the committee, fwiw. I don't think the convo was locked because people don't want to have the convo but rather because it was framed poorly ("should we accept smoosh"). Tons of productive open convos have happened in public. No reason to stop.

Listen. TC39 handled the github issue topic badly. It gave no clear answers to reasoning behind finding alternatives to flatten. Library usage %, threshold. locked a productive discussion "too heated". All that gives the wrong impression.
-
I think the fact that the issue was opened as a PR w/ a particularly weak option focused the conversation poorly. Twitter poll was also really silly and sent the wrong signal. We should start from scratch with an issue that identifies the web compat issue and explores options.

Agreed. The dialogue was respectful, a bit on the funny side, but no one wanted to offend anyone. Maybe it's an opportunity to discuss/present how TC39 works and potentially consider modernizing this process. Lastly It would definitely help if

This thread, tweet-for-tweet, would make for a great conf talk!

I get a sense of deja vu every time another "can't ever change a global namespace" issue comes up (hardly limited to JS). Wish the thinking was more on "how can result remove/work around legacy bad ideas" in general and less "What's a synonym for map?"
