It may have rebooted but it seems unlikely/impossible that they recompiled the OS and replaced the AMI out from under me.
That's because they didn't. The mitigation for meltdown is many turtles deep.

The node you're running on runs linux, plus a hypervisor, which you run linux on. They'd have to mitigate meltdown to protect your instance from other instances, in other words.
