Yes, it's shipping today, but they are not interchangeable, so it still doesn't matter for most devs while binary AST could provide great benefits for everyone with little to no changes to stack. The shrug part sounds sad indeed.

Sorry, just saw that your initial tweet already was about WebAssembly. WASM binary is even smaller than the binary AST proposal mostly because of its semantics. GC is another subject.

Also note that a WASM bin can be downloaded and instantiated at the same time, it's definitely a game changer to me.

Only things that ever stress me about a new parse goal is getting everyone on a common parser (at least I hope to see that).

I don't think we'll ever have a common parser. As for JS we need different AST formats or behaviors. I think that if the grammar is well defined and doesn't change so much, it should be fine and consistent enough.
