Shot in the dark, but now that phone batteries obviously decay and apple announced as much, maybe let users just like, I dunno, replace them? Whenever they want?

Seems like it's sensible, surely $100 in labor on a thousand dollar device is reasonable. I disagree though... A battery has been, until the smartphone, easily replaceable by the consumer. It's aggressively anti consumer to prevent them from basic maintenance.
-
$100 is far too high and if it was forced to be at that rate I'd say you're right. I see no reason why authorized companies couldn't do this kind of replacement for much cheaper if Apple wanted it.
-
I don't disagree with your assessment of the situation, so much as the consumer expectations being aggressively changed for the worse. Sure, places like ifixit could franchise, and to the technically minded it's not that difficult, if you can get your hands on a battery.
-
I think it's reasonable to make devices without trivial user servicable batteries but deeply unreasonable for that to mean it costs hundreds of dollars to replace a battery.
-
that's fair. i'll submit

I’ve done all my own iPhone battery replacements, it just takes some time and patience.

Pretty much this. I don’t care if I have to pay for a battery service as long as it’s not bending me over and fucking me in the ass.
