what's the origin of the phrase "staff engineer"? it feels odd. like...aren't all engineers **on staff**? why is it top tier to be "staff engineer"?

I don't get that either. At Tilde all the engineers are "staff engineer" (at least on our business cards), regardless of level.

We just picked a title that seemed to be used in the industry and gave it to everybody. Originally it was "member of technical staff" stolen from bell labs. I'm cool with alternatives :)
