what's the origin of the phrase "staff engineer"? it feels odd. like...aren't all engineers **on staff**? why is it top tier to be "staff engineer"?

@solomonstre borrowed the MTS title from Bell Labs when I joined and we were pondering what title I should have. -
I worked at Bell Labs and they had that title but others too. Still it was prestigious and people strove to be a DMTS- distinguished member it the technical staff

The term was used in the British navy to describe engineers of the same rank as staff lieutenants, so there’s a fun link there!

VMware had “Member of Technical Staff” (I've been told that's an old SV thing & originally meant as anti-hierarchical), then Sr. MTS, then Staff Engineer, then Sr. Staff Eng., and a couple more above that. Oh, and most of those had multiple grades; 9-10 ranks overall.
