I really don't know how to reply to this. It is very rarely the case that politely building an app suffices as activism. It's messy because activism is about changing power structures, usually to distribute it more evenly. It's unsurprising that it can be messy.

I personally think we have more chance to change the world with apps than with anything else. Sure we need very different apps. And a lot of creativity.
-
Do you mean apps WITHOUT traditional activism?
-
I think so. How about an app that was able to flag written content as dubious. I remember the first revolutionaries, almost always got a printing press first.
-
I don't think this matches the work activists have done (in the recent and distant past) to get people out of their comfort zone. Apps have only increased the amount of tribalism and people seeing what they already believe. Apps are a tactic, but they're only a small one.
-
I think both have an important place. Since, not everyone will be an activist. How can still be organized and do something just as useful.
-
To be more on point, the problem with flagging dubious content is tribalism. There are very few (no?) umpires trusted by the vast majority of Americans anymore. Any app that flagged things you believed as false would rapidly be perceived as "a tool of the opposition"
-
Not everyone can be an activist but everyone can talk to friends and family. Everyone can support the work of people knocking doors and trying to get people out of their comfort zone. And importantly, everyone can avoid criticizing that kind of activism.
-
The "heresy" frame is a strong criticism of a flavor of activism that attempts to make it clear that there's a strong challenge afoot to conventional wisdom. So when people repeat "women are just not well represented because of natural preferences", they get strong pushback.
