In the end, one thing I'm glad about is that I feel like I can tweet about this at all; openness doesn't mean open only when things are good.
this statement *completely* misunderstands the objection. My disappointment with @mozilla deepens
TFW you are mad enough to reply-all the whole company.
I think you blew this way out of proportion. Actual harm to users here doesn’t exist. HN/Reddit hysteria picked up by tech press is a PR/comms blunder, which was not helped by your “upset employee” angle.
Harm exists in the form of lost trust. I’m nowhere near the only employee upset; I don’t know any that are not
Amongst the very small subset of users who even noticed and cared, sure. Your tweet exacerbated rather than mitigated “loss of trust”, because you insinuated that something truly evil did happen here.
If users don’t notice something unethical, that didn’t mean something unethical didn’t happen. It matters.
That’s probably at the core of our disagreement. I don’t think anything that happened here could be described as “unethical”.
How are we still discussing this? Mozilla's standards for ethics are very high and communicated to users. Let's not be debating with our users about whether something they consider is unethical actually is. Let's try to have a little higher standards than that.
I’m not debating any users, I’m telling you what I think
And I'm saying if users felt their privacy or security was violated, Mozilla's behavior was unethical and damaged its ability to successfully perform its mission.
