How do smart people conflate "wacky ideas that seem heretical" with "really bigoted opinions that are not related to empirical concepts at all and are only used to hurt people"?pic.twitter.com/SfkKoXYhSf

So hold on a second. The argument is that Silicon Valley's alleged "PC" problem would prevent someone from inventing something like cyrptocurrency in Silicon Valley? I really don't even know where to start ...pic.twitter.com/jmRH09H1wt
The critique that Silicon Valley is "too PC" is targeted almost entirely at "social justice" topics (bizarre stuff like "it sucks that you're not allowed to debate whether blacks are poor because they have a lower IQ")
The idea that Silicon Valley considers "doing work that the government decided to be too hard" to be a heretical concept is deeply, deeply bizarre. If anything, SV has a glut of ideas like Bitcoin, and investors are far too credulous about them.
Maybe @sama has been getting pushback about the fact that investors are throwing money down a black hole of cryptocurrency projects and wants permission to believe in them?
To be clear, @sama's argument is that it's important for Silicon Valley to have a norm that tolerates, *literally*, "gays are evil", because he perceives that it's too hard to pursue ideas like Bitcoin and SpaceX.
1. It's morally repugnant to tell people that they can't attempt to establish norms against calling gay people evil. 2. There is simply no shortage of support for ideas like Bitcoin and SpaceX. Coupling "wacky ideas" with "repugnant attitudes" is just a terrible take.

I must confess I thought he meant “if we say disparaging things about gay physicists it will help them say novel things about physics”, which made no sense at all to me. Instead, what he says still makes no sense…
It reminds me of the notion of Epistemic Relativism! It is a little insane and maybe completely deranged to have no moral compass.
