"This is uncomfortable, but it’s possible we have to allow people to say disparaging things about gay people if we want them to be able to say novel things about physics." What on Earth is going on?

So hold on a second. The argument is that Silicon Valley's alleged "PC" problem would prevent someone from inventing something like cyrptocurrency in Silicon Valley? I really don't even know where to start ...pic.twitter.com/jmRH09H1wt
Show this thread -
The critique that Silicon Valley is "too PC" is targeted almost entirely at "social justice" topics (bizarre stuff like "it sucks that you're not allowed to debate whether blacks are poor because they have a lower IQ")
Show this thread -
The idea that Silicon Valley considers "doing work that the government decided to be too hard" to be a heretical concept is deeply, deeply bizarre. If anything, SV has a glut of ideas like Bitcoin, and investors are far too credulous about them.

Maybe
@sama has been getting pushback about the fact that investors are throwing money down a black hole of cryptocurrency projects and wants permission to believe in them?Show this thread -
To be clear,
@sama's argument is that it's important for Silicon Valley to have a norm that tolerates, *literally*, "gays are evil", because he perceives that it's too hard to pursue ideas like Bitcoin and SpaceX.Show this thread -
1. It's morally repugnant to tell people that they can't attempt to establish norms against calling gay people evil. 2. There is simply no shortage of support for ideas like Bitcoin and SpaceX. Coupling "wacky ideas" with "repugnant attitudes" is just a terrible take.

They’re not actually smart
-
That is one possibility but I don't know if it always fits the evidence. "They are suffering from a delusion" or "they are hanging out with some bad people" seems more likely.
-
Don’t think so: this is sophomoric stuff (that’s also morally repugnant).

Because startup culture is so fouled at this point it values only the generation of endless ideas without regard for their actual quality or merit.

It’s also funny because they are trying to make all sorts of speech heretical: anything that suggests maybe people matter more than some abstract and ill-defined concept of “progress”.

It's a dull and super common point of view held by people who think they are super smart but actually aren't that smart.

They may be smart but they lack wisdom (and the appropriate level of critical thinking skills). They're also egotistical and typically believe that the proverbial wheel hasn't been invented yet.

Maybe in a more homogeneous society like China, but we could not be more diverse. This is the opposite to business conclusion that “diversity is good for innovation”. Common sense suggests these diverse teams could only flourish in an environment where everyone feels accepted.

I’m trying to think of any really good ideas that a company like Apple or Facebook have come up with in the past five years. Can’t think of any. I have to believe the key to SV stagnation is opening up the field to fresh voices from suppressed communities.
