We need to bootstrap the WebAssembly VM perf wars. Some use cases demand certain optimizations. E.g. fast bounds check is table stakes. It can be 10-100x perf difference in hot paths such as interpreters. The difference between using it or not.

Sure, but that’s for toys. What I mean is real code in real usage, that’s not gameable. Even things like SPEC end up having their http://179.art moment where you can optimize it silly if you want to play silly. I’d rather avoid that!
