I think there was a *ton* of outreach work and a gradual deprecation process. Multiprocess was already going to break lots of add-ons (and did) so it was timed pretty well.
What rust does is flat out impossible here. The old situation was "all our internals are a public API have fun". There's no way to smooth over that transition the way Rust does.
