Can I hear from people who could never get into C/C++ but got into Rust? How hard was it?

I only have experience with managed languages and runtimes (VB, C#, JS). C/C++ always felt too scary. But reading about Rust is getting me excited and I wonder if that could be my entry point to lower level programming.

no raw pointers removes at least 50% of c++ WTF errors

your stack traces will still suck like c++ you will fight with the borrow checker the manual will make you feel guilty for using clone() and Rc, but in reality you need it it is one of my favorite languages

it's one of my favorite languages because 1. i felt like i learned something new (borrow checker) and 2. gives you new capabilities (systems programming with safety)

with that said, c++14 is pretty good and the ecosystem and performance is second to none

My problem with C++ is that there are so many clashing conventions and subcultures. I guess that's just me getting a taste of my own medicine.

rust refuses to put anything in stdlib though, so there's a similar problem of 10 different future/promise libraries, none blessed

Core team members work on the main future library and tokio (the main io library) is more or less blessed. The cookbook also was an effort to bless (and spend team time beefing up) existing libs. I wouldn't conflate "not in the stdlib" with "not blessed" in Rust.

There's still an ongoing effort needed to make everyone aware of the things they should be discovering, but it's not because the core team and subteams aren't willing to get behind a single solution. Just want to avoid stdlib graveyard syndrome.

Agree with that. Just hard to know what’s got traction among those in the know. Would be nice to have a badge of some kind at the very least

Hopefully stuff like https://blog.rust-lang.org/2017/05/05/libz-blitz.html … helps.

Yeah. That project is intended to allow projects to seem "blessed" without cursing them forever by putting them in the stdlib ;)
