So I initially retweeted this thinking that OP was implying that ignorance of how to use Git was intolerable, however it's the opposite. There's nothing wrong with Git, and I'll happily help out anyone with trouble.https://twitter.com/mcclure111/status/929408829485473792 …

There is _A LOT_ wrong with the user experience of Git. However, it's a standard that for better or worse is pervasive, and anyone working professionally in software today needs to learn.

I know people who don't really know how to program (a little HTML and CSS) and are able to be productive with basic git and GitHub. The widespread belief among programmers that git is unusably bad is more or less wrong. Enabling collaboration workflows is a big deal.

It's not _unusably_ bad - as you say, lots of people make use of it via a UI and CLI. But there are aspects which are impossible to internalise because they don't make any sense, IMO. Hence the number of purple links when I need to google obscure git commands ;-)

Yeah I think to know everything it gets hairy. But almost nobody operates at that level. Same with the web. The model is pretty baroque, but many many people get a lot done on the basic tools.
