It's mostly about the typical size of Smalltalk methods. 3-5 lines was considered optimal. Would fit in a ST browser text pane without scrolling

Ruby has exactly the same ethos :) https://robots.thoughtbot.com/sandi-metz-rules-for-developers … I think the lack of file-wide lexical scope (classes and methods create fresh scopes) has a big effect.
