It's not a universal OS as some people think. It's universal (safe!) ELF, not universal Linux. Still a big big deal.

It predates my professional programming, but QBASIC (comes with DOS5) and Visual Basic 6 are both contenders too.

Curious, what did you do on ARM?
-
Oh I didn't work on it. Was just enumerating game changing tech. Didn't occur to me that it could be seen as an enumeration of my work

-
Absolutely! ARM is game changing, hopefully it would catch up for server side workloads.

I understand Rails, jQuery, Rust, and Wasm care to elaborate on ARM?
-
ARM changed the calculus around power consumption, making it possible to build small, fast-enough devices that have all-day batteries.
-
Thank you! I also look forward to working with Arm at some point. The new server Cavium with all the cores look really good!

What is Java? How did it fit into next gen Unix: Plan 9? Patents or bad business?
-
Java far predates me programming (1995). There's a lot of interesting stuff in the 80s and 90s, like the rise of scripting langs, JITs, etc.
-
Like running binaries from a Sparc NFS server on your x86 workstation.
