Was something stopping them from using asm.js?

Memory usage, I heard. That and load time

But I don't know any details... Was complaining myself when they released for Chrome only

Apparently the asm renderer is 11MB w/ poor xbrowser perf. asm would have been another NaCl. Best to migrate+wait for the standard (WebASM).

Except that asm.js always works everywhere.

Actually for big chunks of asm.js code, the JS parser might require extreme amounts of memory meaning that it doesn't always work everywhere

Performance (here: memory) may be an issue, hence WASM. My point still stands. Plus, engines can be optimized for some loads (as Fx is/was).

Well, jQuery works everywhere. Doesn’t mean you should use it. Especially if you’re building a new product.

Don't get what you're getting at. In any case, Earth Web must have been compiled from other lang. Target asm.js by default and WASM l8er/now

The medium post goes into those details. Worth a read. TLDR: Lack of threads and memory were issues.pic.twitter.com/wTBzKLopAL

Was asm.js a problem on Firefox too? Or just Chrome?

Yeah, good question. Not sure if the perf issues were in Chrome, FF, or both had large enough issues that it wasn’t worth it.
