Cool; still not a widely-known history, and it matters (lest it repeat :-/).

Trolling aside, I totally credit @luke_wagner for getting the WebAssembly ball rolling across browsers! Also, blame him for the silly name!

Name had consensus among Luke, @littlecalculist and me at least. Including wasm for short, not webasm to avoid you-know-what-gasm, & logo.

Luke & I discussed naming+abbrev at GDC two months earlier than that. I explicitly warned against webasm based on prior asm.js trolling.

I can also attest to having heard the "asm.js as a path to wasm not pnacl" story quite early. Years wasted is right.

As for history repeating, I doubt we have much control over that, sadly.

Seems this thread is bleeding over about way more than just name! At least for me, outcome of PNaCl was positive if we got WebAssembly 😁

There’s plenty to dislike about PNaCl as a technology without even needing the Open Web Feels hating on it more.

I’m not hating. Still see a lot of red at https://developer.chrome.com/native-client/migration … on the WebAssembly side. Big picture point is open web still lags native.
