To be clear, if "even apple" can't keep stock during preorders, the fact that Google sold out tells us nothing about what will happen later.

This is how
@verge reports iPhone X selling out. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2017/10/27/16556722/apple-iphone-x-delivery-dates-delays … So being out of stock for months is "better than expected"pic.twitter.com/IFvzRJgtOf

Here,
@nickstatt of@verge points out matter of factly that new products from apple won't have a good supply chain. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theverge.com/platform/amp/circuitbreaker/2017/9/15/16317688/apple-iphone-x-supply-demand-balance-sold-out …pic.twitter.com/Is5TLE6tcV

when google sells 13 million phones in one weekend, i'll call selling out a good signhttps://www.theverge.com/2015/9/28/9407767/apple-iphone-sales-6s-6s-plus …
-
pixel sales are negligible — google should be able to keep them in stockhttps://www.recode.net/2017/10/4/16418170/google-pixel-market-share-2017-event-chart-data …
-
This is silly. iPhone X is same order of magnitude. Millions of phones are not "negligible"
-
There's just no reason to put so much editorializing into the meaning of selling out with so much coming from speculate.
-
yes, i should just ignore google's continued inability to keep a phone in stock, despite selling millions of fewer units than apple
-
Cool narrative man.

iPhones selling out in the preorder period, and Google not being able to meet demand *all year round* are different things.
-
They weren't able last year. This year all we know so far is they sold out in the preorder like everyone else.
-
Also, Apple's expected to be out of stock on the X for months.
-
Apple’s latest iPhone is always in short supply for the first few months. It’s also usually the most popular smartphone on the planet.
-
It ingests nearly all supply *in the world* of certain key components. This year it’s OLED displays.
-
Early in each generation, the demand is greater than is humanly possible to manufacture.
-
Google’s Pixel is a popular and (I’m told) excellent device, but it also sells in relatively small quantity (~1-2m vs iPhone 190-205m).
-
Google also seem to suffer supply constraints *all year round*, which suggests they could never scale production up to iPhone levels.
