Why did tabs fail in programming languages (for the most part)? Maybe display on the web? Any other good explanations?

I also dimly recall something about Windows having their own version of tab (a la /r vs /n?) that complicated cross-platform file sharing?

Differences in \r \n are regarding line endings, not tabs
