like.. for indentation? Inconsistent rendering and definition of what a "tab stop" was?

I also dimly recall something about Windows having their own version of tab (a la /r vs /n?) that complicated cross-platform file sharing?

Differences in \r \n are regarding line endings, not tabs

Code sharing across Unix and non-Unix systems was a thing, even in early 90s.

8-space stops goes back to TTYs and typewriters before them (I'm not expert on history). 4-space dissed this trad. & sowed style war seeds.

K&R was beautifully typeset using 5-space stops, which I imitated at first in my own code, but kernel & most userland Unix used 8-sp stops.
