i think it’s that you can avoid process startup overhead and may even not need to fully sandbox at the OS level

storage is where the offerings get very vendor specific, but it's very similar to how Heroku users would solve problems w/ message queues :)

You need some durable storage eventually. I don't know yet why databases are verboten but other forms

most lambda databases have hooks to call Lambda functions. Object storage on Azure and GCP have the same.

A really really really important part of all serverless offerings is the billing model.

AWS took the unit of billing from "server-month" to "server-hour" and shaved billions off of the cost of starting up and being flexible.

Lambda and pals take the unit down to "server-millisecond" and the size of opportunity for previously unviable apps is similarly huge.

there's another part we don't talk about much: Amazon is pushing the cost of compute to zero. Storage is the real business.
