They want to get off flash

That means we have some leverage if there's something they want ;)
-
Not if the standards bodies cave to their will
-
The fact that "we" and the standards bodies are not the same thing is bad. It's the thing to fix.
-
I would agree. It's why I've liked WHATWG better than W3C historically.

Could it be about plugins and forcing browsers to support the tech, and not Netflix?
-
I don't think the browsers were "forced" to do anything here ;)

So they have more devices compatible by default with their DRM
-
Sounds like we have some leverage then, and they "won't do it either way" ;)

the "damned if you do, so don't" argument can't fly, here, either, because nobody wants native plugins due to security risks wrt DRM plugins
-
I'm in favor of the EFF compromise, not "no DRM"
-
I am too, for the record.

Think of all the HW Netflix has to support. Not only browsers, but STBs, SmartTVs, etc. Each manufacturer does their crazy & it's a mess
-
I can also see Netflix offer their own OVP+DRM SaaS offer to smaller media channels.

DRM is a fine way to rent content, but no sort of ownership. If you can't open it, you don't own it.

My guess would be because they are currently forced to support 4+ standards and they want to have to support one DRM.

Netflix et al have a material gain in furthering the amount of control they have over the consumption of their media
