A commit isn't just a cmd-s on the last thing you were typing. I think of it as an intentional unit of change to the system.
Doesn't git give you both chronological context (dates) so you don't need to rely on history for that?

Rebase creates new commits with new dates. That's what I mean when I refer to "faux history". "Pretend this happened just now".
