http://yehudakatz.com/2017/09/16/facebook-patent-clause-protects-facebook-not-you/ … The Facbook patent clause punishes you for suing Facebook, but lets them sue you. Apache is better.

Would like to understand better how Oracle vs Google situation could potentially apply to react. Facebook isn't seeking licensing fees?

Google uses React in web app. Google sues Facebook for patent infringement in Oculus hardware. FB sues Google over React patents.

The point in my article, though was: Google contributes patches to React. Facebook sues Google for patent infringement. Facebook is fine.

Google sues Facebook for unrelated patent infringement (hardware, say). Now Google can be sued simply for using react.

So the clause blocks Google from suing Facebook for any patent reason but not vice versa. This is bad.

Thing is, if React was Berkeley licensed, no one would be complaining, and FB could use relevant patents to sue anyone at any time at all.

Thanks for thoughtful criticism! That’s a really good point and I’ll mention that in future internal conversations.

Maybe it’s worth bringing up that to this day, Facebook has never sued another party except in defence. But still, agree with your point.

It's not when everything goes well that companies tend to abuse patents. It's when the business is failing and they grasp for every straw...

Let’s be clear: the patent grant is *not* revoked if FB sues you for patents first. It says so explicitly in the grant.

Right, but the point of the revocation clause is to discourage bad behavior, and FB is not punished for the lawsuit.

It's more or less the point of my post. The revocation is where the incentives come from. FB is immune from the incentives of React license.

FB goes Apache when they risk being replaced (RocksDB), any web+mobile options to React+React Native or are all other frameworks web-only?

Ah, maybe React goes Apache if Angular regains popularity, but haven't seen mobile support in libs with easier migrations (Preact/Inferno)

We'll see if WordPress's intended move to Preact or Vuejs will encourage Facebook to reconsider React licensinghttps://ma.tt/2017/09/on-react-and-wordpress/amp/ …
