I'm also seeing a lot of people say that the only other option is MIT aka not granting a license to the patent at all. Not so: Apache.

Imagine a world in which many companies adopted this license. Would that change your perspective on it?
-
Someone already did the legwork to make something like that work in a bilateral way. It's called Apache.
-
Right, but it’s also less vehemently anti-patent. Do you not see a space for a stronger license?
-
Maybe one that applies to all contributors and users, yes. Not one that singles out a particular contributor for special treatment.
-
I also think people aren't thinking enough about the fact that FB the entity makes hardware that more ppl think have a legit claim to patent
-
So the react PATENTS can ensnare you in a disagreement with Facebook over VR hardware patents.

You acknowledge the system is broken but criticize FB for trying something new? How will it ever get fixed?
-
New != Better. Unilaterally singling out a particular contributor in an OSS IP license is bad, full stop.
-
Interestingly tho the FB clause only licenses patents from FB, not from other contributors. So it's *more* restrictive on FB.
-
You'd think they'd be interested in fixing that...

I'm embarrassingly ignorant of the issues here. Do you have a link to an agenda free explainer that you would recommend?
-
Not sure an agenda free explainer exists Andy... Here is one take though.https://medium.com/@ji/the-react-license-for-founders-and-ctos-b38d2538f3e5 …

That explainer is overtly positive about the react POV
-
Agreed.Yehuda, but I have not found an article that is neutral. To balance that, here's an article not from react POV,https://medium.com/@raulk/if-youre-a-startup-you-should-not-use-react-reflecting-on-the-bsd-patents-license-b049d4a67dd2 …

Thanks guys.

Plenty of companies have patents, but a right to revoke use retroactively and in open source software, HELL NAW!!!
