fwiw it's disappointing to me that the decision to change the file name for Gemfile for the whole ecosystem was made so unilaterally.

Even if there's a small amount of benefit in the rename, there is no way to recoup the disruption cost across the entire ecosystem.

Gemfile is not going away. Literally the only change is that if you have both a gems.rb and a Gemfile in the same directory,1st will be used

Or if you have an ordinary file called gems.rb in a subdirectory, presumably. It globally reserves a normal-looking filename.

And we already did the heavy lifting of building consensus around Gemfile across a huge amount of tools!

gems.rb support was added 3 years ago, before I ever contributed to bundler. I really don’t know what to tell you

Concrete things the team could be doing differently now: - deprecate gems.rb, or - remove the 3.0 timeframe for Gemfile removal

I don’t think there is any timeframe for Gemfile removal, I expect support for Gemfile to remain in Bundler basically until the end of time

Info that's out there said removal by 3.0. If never, why duplicate feature and complicate ecosystem?

that’d be a great question for whoever implemented the feature — for all I knew, this was a consensus plan

I don't think it was ever a consensus plan.

I can only speak to my understanding of it. My apologies if that’s incorrect, but as I’ve said, it really does predate me
