After $20,000+ in Ruby Together donations over past few years, @basecamp has canceled its membership. Can't stand behind current direction.

Seems like it is a relatively minor change IMO. You’ll get over it 2 weeks after you’ve upgraded. This change will help a lot of new devs.
-
Except that a decade of blog posts, documentation, stack overflow will be wrong. & it won't help devs using editor plugins assuming Gemfile
-
In like 5 or 10 years maybe, that seems a bit alarmist to claim at the moment though.
-
Libraries change all the time, this change is no different than any other breaking change. The sky is not falling
-
I'm not being alarmist nor claiming the sky is falling. I'm claiming the cost isn't worth the benefit.
-
What cost though? I agree the benefit is small, but the idea is so was the cost so it balanced out.

That seems like it falls into "change for the sake of change" category, instead of "change because of X". Do they have a rationale?
-
There are rationales but it's not worth the churn.

The only change is if both exist, currently it uses Gemfile, 2.0 will prefer gems.rb. Both work today and will continue to for a long time.
