What if we could just care a little less? Or only at certain times? Make that emotional boundary a little firmer *in our own hearts*.

What if we didn't spray our empathy out indiscriminately, but employed it tactically, to gather information via our emotional machinery?

It's so easy to forget that the stress we feel about the opinions of random 1-off strangers is not trivial to change, but can be changed.

My favorite license is the ISC license, because whatever. I write this code for it to be read run and modified. Go fuckin nuts with it.

There's this fantasy land where companies will need to use FLOSS and they'll abide by the terms of the GPL and add to the commons dutifully.

Or, failing that, they'll pay for the commercial version, and support FLOSS with their cash money dollars.

And some certainly do. I suspect most just avoid it like the plague, or at least avoid shipping it in anything, or just violate the license.

Companies typically (a) avoid costs that they can avoid, and (b) break rules they can't be punished for. So it's all about enforcement.

("costs" here especially means "risks"; big companies especially often pay a high premium to avoid unlikely-but-very-bad scenarios)

I want companies to actually use my code, because THAT will tend to lead to them contributing to it more often than if they weren't using it

      Replying to @izs

Once upon a time I wrote a blog post about this: http://yehudakatz.com/2010/01/05/the-maximal-usage-doctrine-for-open-source/ … TLDR usage is the high order bit.
