Is there any turnkey solution at all for dual-booting Windows and Linux?

It's slow. When it's fast I'll use the hell out of it. I already use it for small situations.

I think WSL (Ubuntu on Windows) is probably the endgame. Progress is swift so I predict success eventually.

In the meantime, it works great as long as you're not doing something extremely IO constrained (watching FS sadly qualifies)

For small and medium projects I use it like crazy. When hundreds or thousands of files are involved, not yet.

Use UEFI, install Windows first, then install Linux. Most distros will automatically pick up Windows' UEFI partition/loader and set it up

yep, works great for me. On some machines, I need to make sure the efi partition is selected in the installer (for the bootloader)

For some reason, every time I attempt this, it fails for some reason. Generally too many steps.

I'm surprised the Ubuntu installer doesn't "just work" - I use UEFI and already have Windows installed. I guess I'm also scared to brick

The only times recently that ubuntu has left my system unbootable, reinstalling linux and selecting efi partition for bootloader fixed it.

Two distinct SATA devices and the BIOS/UEFI boot device selector.

So basically: install a second hard drive, use the normal BIOS to switch to the other one, the end?

Yes. As bonus, it’s possible to set up VirtualBox such that the drive not booted on hardware can be booted in a VM.

(I’ve only used a Linux drive so that it can boot both on metal and in VirtualBox on top of Windows. Dunno if reverse actually works.)

No need for that, this is old wisdom. My SSHD had macOS/Arch on MacBook, now is same-Arch/Windows on a PC. Use rEFInd.

haha ok, it sounded as the old grub advice, because grub can handle windows while windows boot manager can't handle Linux.

That's what he said. Basically, one must be very careful to not have Windows overwrite the MBR.

There's no need to be careful, if Windows mess it (I don't recall if that was the case), you just overwrite it with rEFInd again.

The reason I say there's a bad need to be careful is that nor Windows or Linux installation will mess each other partitions.
