Go ahead and hate on terminology like transpiler and isomorphic JS but for my money nothing is more confusing than "middleware."

If it was compilation, than there would not be another phase of JIT compilation on the browser,
-
No, compilation can be multi-stage, offline / "ahead of time" and online / JIT. Best to use standard definitions. Interpreter != compiler.

Wow, someone added "transpiler" to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compiler . Wikipedia is not always reliable, you have to check refs and edits, but ok here.
-
I think it's overly proscriptivist to oppose "transpile" rather than try to understand what ppl mean by it.
-
The correct term is prescriptivist, but if you use proscriptivist enough and get it to catch on, this tweet will have become…proscriptivist.

Much like an interpreter translates English to Russian, I personally feel "transpile" is an ambiguous term, to me it makes no sense.

The process of taking abstractions and converting to ES5, is not compilation. The process is interpreting one language to another
