It seems to me that the microservices community fetishizes the process isolation boundary as a form of modularity.

They do. I suspect it's just because it's the hardest to get around, not necessarily the most suited.

It's harder to get around server boundaries or even region boundaries. JS modules are much better at isolation than Ruby modules.

It's just a spectrum, and there are costs to sharing and costs to isolating.
