I don't agree with either position, but they're inconsistent. "women don't like software b/c they don't like machines" is silly.
:) This is also why I think the current discourse around gender and software is badly missing the point.

I'm not sure what the discourse is about, TBQH. It doesn't really relate to what the memo said, mostly about rejecting straw men.

And of course there's the, um, odd phenomenon of people reacting to the takedown of straw men by insisting that the straw men were right.

The manifesto more or less said that Google is "watering one side of the lawn" for no reason bc women aren't interested anyway.

Yes. He said women aren't interested. He never said women are less capable, and most of the reaction has assumed he did.
