Tech: problem w/ software is too much focus on machines over ppl. Tech: less women is "natural" -- they care more about ppl than machines 🤔

not sure that’s how it works… but the ‘boys club’ part is on target

I don't agree with either position, but they're inconsistent. "women don't like software b/c they don't like machines" is silly.

Turns out that software is about more than "machines". Building skylight involves "people" and "helping" and "talking" too.

Irrelevant. What decides whether someone goes into software isn't what it actually involves, but what the person thinks it involves.

Tech definitely has a PR problem. Think about the things vs people balance in any portrayal of tech in popular media. That's what matters.

Whether things vs people is a real distinction hasn't been conclusively determined AFAICT. If we did grant the assumption it does, a field

with a high things/people ratio public perception could be expected to have lower representation of people>things people.

      1) We don't have to grant the assumption. 2) Existence of a cause doesn't rule out others. 3) We should fix the PR regardless. It's toxic.

There aren't a large amount of high paying careers with millions of people doing them where a mix of skills isn't important.

Over focus on machines and systems over people and helping is bad in most industries.

:) This is also why I think the current discourse around gender and software is badly missing the point.

I'm not sure what the discourse is about, TBQH. It doesn't really relate to what the memo said, mostly about rejecting straw men.

And of course there's the, um, odd phenomenon of people reacting to the takedown of straw men by insisting that the straw men were right.

The manifesto more or less said that Google is "watering one side of the lawn" for no reason bc women aren't interested anyway.

I really don't think that's a straw man interpretation. I think it's really what he meant to say (and said).

Yes. He said women aren't interested. He never said women are less capable, and most of the reaction has assumed he did.
