I also think it would be good for Patreon et al to be considered more "legitimate" in the OSS community.

1: In particular, it would be helpful if people could be funded to do exploratory work without worrying about being accused of fraud

2: If their exploration doesn't pan out. I'd have a lot of trouble justifying setting up a Patreon for this reason.
