I think a good deal of that has to do with what jobs the maintainers are willing to take.

Almost any maintainer of widely deployed OSS project can get a full time job working at a bigcorp to help maintain it.

That doesn't mean that the project is healthy. If only one bigcorp is funding it, it could decide to pull resources.

Right, but a healthy OSS project has multiple people working on it across multiple companies. Any one company can't kill it.
