In Montana: Trump: 279k Hillary: 177k Gianforte: 189k Quist: 166k Most Hillary voters stuck with Quist. Almost 100k Trump voters dropped.

Think about that. Tons of people who were willing to vote for TRUMP weren't willing to vote for Gianforte. The republic is not lost.

this statistic merely illustrates how little most people care about primaries

Weird explanation for the Democrat getting almost as many votes as Hillary.

I think that's because Trump voters feel like they've already won...which means we have a big hill to climb to sway back to intellectualism

Don't disagree but it's worth mentioning that it wasn't a presidential election so likely a lot fewer people turned out due to laziness

That affect seems to have affected trump voters drastically more than Hillary voters

Maybe. We don't have enough information to determine that IMO.

I think you're injecting more uncertainty into those numbers than is warranted. There's some questions, but they're stark.

I just don't think they're overly surprising. Non-Trump voters are very vocal/political right now. Makes sense a higher % would go vote rn

Touché. But having grown up in MT I think the results of an off-cycle election as a prognostication tool are overblown.

Less prognostication, more response to the people freaking out about people voting for the Republican.

Ah. In that case I agree - not super sensible to wring hands over people who always have and always will vote Republican.

I appreciate the optimism, but it's tough to compare apples to apples with a special election.

They usually have low turnout, but I'd venture the high proportion of Dem votes were people looking to express their anger.

That said, the outrage against Trump does not bode well for him in 2020, esp. that he lost the popular vote.

But... that said, what awful candidate will the Dems put forth in 2020? They seem determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Not surprising at all - the vast majority of conservatives I know were appalled at his use of unilateral violence w/o being truly threatened
