At some point "don't be evil" became axiomatic to googlers. Anything that advances Google's mission is advancing good therefore not evil.

I don't love the hard sell. Reminds me of what Microsoft is doing with Edge in Windows 10. Do those at least go away forever if dismissed?

Honestly, if Googlers want chrome to compete on the merits, putting their thumb on the scale to this degree should be uncomfortable.

How do they know if chrome's gaining market share because it's better vs stuck in front of eyeballs on the world's biggest search engine

It will forever be a big bold asterisk on chrome's ascendance. "used performance enhancing drugs"

Honestly, the banners don't bother me nearly so much as the "to get offline you must use Chrome." First is marketing, second is interop.

The banners are a very heavy thumb on the scale. For a company with such a meritocratic culture, why do you need it?

Those banners rolled out at a time when the majority of people seeing it were on IE. It could be seen as an attempt to save the web from IE.
