I strongly recognize both that I share the "community-centric view" and that I disagree with the "maintainer view"https://medium.com/@mikeal/maintainer-vs-community-97edc28387ad …

Sure. I'm not making any value judgments. In this dichotomy, I prefer the community view. But doesn't necessarily address sustainability.
-
Interesting. I agree with the for-profit corporation point. I find the maintainer view to be fundamentally incompatible with sustainability.
-
Me too, the maintainer view is like a worst case scenario of "sunk cost fallacy." As adoption increases the situation can only get worse.
-
to be honest, I mostly see my job as a maintainer as "chaos management" - keep the exponentially growing community productive.
-
the more flexibility you have to spend on pure community work the more compelled you are to grease the squeaky wheels nobody else can.
-
yeah. My biggest mistakes on OSS have been under-investing in community empowerment. No amount of community empowerment is too much ime.
-
mine is similar but basically the same, not realizing when i needed to intervene to empower people to take on leadership.

I find that setting up 'quests' where maintainers write down the details of doing some small-but-annoying task pays massive dividends.

Add to this list: Hoodie, Node.js (after 2015), and a bunch of smaller projects in the Node.js ecosystem doing "OPEN Open Source."
-
Rails and Postgres too, I think.

What I usually say is "money has an influence, you can either write down what that influence is or allow it run rampant in unintended ways."
-
I think it's ok if money is largely decentralized, as long as it's very clear how it works.

I think there *are* solutions in the middle, but they offer incremental improvements to exponentially increasing workloads. Doomed to fail.
