I think the main thing about GL is that mentions of Hitler create an environment that is ripe for cognitive bias, so it should be avoided

I think we can agree that most such comparisons are unjustified and unproductive... but clearly not all.

Right. I think people often underestimate the way they turn conversations into bias-factories, even when nominally justified.
