in a bassinet at first in the room is useful because proximity for diaper changes and feeding

when they need a diaper change or feed they will cry so until then it's better for parents to get as much sleep as poss

our baby was in our bed at the beginning. We switch to her bed after 4 month. No problem at all.

yes it took some convincing but we did it and never had to share my bed apart from the occasional nightmare years later.
